Under the sea in Lanzarote

18 may 2018
Under the sea in Lanzarote. Gabrielle Konali

Lanzarote has no shortage of beaches drenched in sunlight, and thanks to its pleasant climate and the quality of its waters, it is one of the most popular islands among couples seeking an unforgettable destination for their wedding. Mere minutes by boat from Playa Blanca awaits a truly unique and highly romantic location in la Bahía de Las Coloradas.

The bay has risen in popularity in recent years as the perfect spot for wedding ceremonies. While nature lovers and the environmentally conscious often seek locations filled with flora and fauna, keen divers can exchange their vows underwater and the culturally minded can choose from striking libraries and museums as venues to really surprise their guests.

The Museo Atlántico is Europe’s first underwater museum and is perfect for all of the couples listed above. At 12 metres below sea level, the museum is located on an area of the sea bed steeped in crystalline waters and features over 300 sculptures to really bring its installations to life.

This unique venue in the Atlantic Ocean has been designed using materials respecting the local environment in order to create an artificial reef and increase marine biomass, promoting reproduction among the species inhabiting its waters. Covering some 2,500m2, the museum provides a wealth of perfect settings and backdrops for your big day.

A resounding success, the museum comes to life through the various sculptures that have gradually transformed the reef envisioned by artist James deCaires Taylor, with the initial greys evolving into a stunning rainbow of colours.

The museum is the perfect spot to visit with your loved one, thanks to the love and care poured into its creation. Not only is the artist’s love for the island and for preserving our seas reflected in every sculpture, the museum also represents how love transforms something grey and lifeless into something pulsing with colour and life.

Come and be swept away by the beauty of the Canary Islands!
