With its springs, its streams and its splendid vegetation, it’s no wonder that the island of La Palma is also known as the “Isla Bonita” (pretty island). Wherever you look, you see green – from north to south and east to west. It is a perfect paradise for saying “I do”.
We invite you to discover some of the most picturesque churches and shrines on one of the most beautiful Canary Islands.
Shrine of Nuestra Señora de la Concepción
The original building dates back to the 16th and 17th centuries. It is one of the most interesting temples in Breña Alta, as it was the first parish in the municipality. Located close to La Concepción Viewpoint, it boasts impressive views of the capital city of La Palma. This setting makes it easy to get fabulous photos of the newly-weds under a clear, blue sky.
Church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios
This beautiful example of Mudejar architecture is found at the heart of the historic quarter of Los Llanos de Aridane. Not much is known about the history of this wonderful church, as most of the documentation on it was lost in a fire. That may be why some brides and grooms confess to feeling surrounded by a certain air of mystery combined with the charm imbued by its Flemish images and statues.
Shrine of Nuestra Señora de la Piedad y San Bartolomé
In Puntallana, more specifically in the area of La Galga, we find this curious shrine. Its façade is broken by a balcony made of Canary Islands pine, where the statue of the Virgen de la Piedad usually appears during the Fiesta de las Mujeres (women’s festival), which is held in September. When it was first built, mass was only held here to ask for storms to pass by quickly and not affect the municipality. Those who marry here are understood to be asking the same for their marriage.
Matriz de El Salvador Church
An emblem of the Renaissance in the Canary Islands, the interior of this church—located in the capital city of the island—houses many works of art in an interesting variety of styles. The sunlight shining through its stained-glass windows creates a magical show of colour that entrances anyone who sees it.
Today’s article gives you a small sample of the island’s churches, but there are many more, all worthy of hosting a loving couple as they pledge their eternal love to each other. Visit us and discover them.
