Get Married On The “Day of the Deceased”. Gabrielle Konali

Over the past few years, we have seen an increase in the number of couples who want to say I do at Halloween. Whether it is because they think it is the perfect date for honouring their departed and having a sense that they are accompanying them at this important moment of their lives or because they like all things goth, zombies or any other creature out of a horror story, 31 October is becoming a very popular date on the wedding calendar.

Do you fancy holding a different kind of wedding at Halloween? Travel to Canary Islands and vow eternal love on the “Día de los Finados”.

“Finados” is what the islanders call their deceased. This festivity is a tribute to those who have departed and they are remembered on a night full of the joy that is so characteristic of Canary Islanders. Families, friends and neighbours gather together for a special night with lots of funny anecdotes and stories about the loved ones who are no longer with them. It is a chance to celebrate their life, the memories that united them and the laughter they shared.

Tradition dictates that we should stay awake all night, drinking wine (Canary Island wines are amongst the best in the world), anisette or honey rum and eating cakes, cheese, frangollo (a typical dessert) and nuts, such as walnuts and chestnuts. Guitars and “timples” accompany local singers as they while away the hours to dawn.

Love is present every minute of this festivity, as it is every moment of our lives. Come and experience this exciting date here and you will carry it in your heart always.

Canary Islands. Celebrating love 365 days a year.
